About The Artwork

The painting is a self reflection, a self portrait of sorts. The main character is an alter ego I created of me as a fictional graffiti artist called Ed'n (One). Here, he is in an elevator, which represents the place that hangs in the middle, between the underground and the heavens—a metaphor for life itself. In the light, we see this character tagging the elevator walls... He is drawn in an exaggerated and inverted reverse perspective—homage to the old Byzantine way of drawing (things that are closer are smaller, and more distant things appear bigger) but also out of spite for the norm... In the darkness, to his right, we see the stairs, also tagged with graffiti and characters I have done in the past, as if to say that this harder way has already been passed and tagged by the character. He is now in the elevator, taking maybe the easier route, but is he going down or up? Or has he stopped time and jammed the elevator to take his time to draw? The characters in the bottom left of the painting are the people waiting for the elevator: a granny who is too old to take the stairs, a fat aristocrat with a tall hat, and a business man, nervously looking at the time on his wrist watch... My “Blockheads” cycle is inspired by the urban environment and the visual style of street-art culture. It comprises painted wooden-beam sculptures and large-format acrylic paintings with two-dimensional characters that fulfill their individual block of space in their own “mentally limited” way. In the Blockhead acrylic paintings, I approximate street-art murals inspired by urban life: larger-scale compositions with the Blockhead characters in various urban settings. These are all images, scenes, and characters from our everyday city lives as grotesque portraits of our current society and culture.

Multi-media artist, working both in traditional and contemporary fine art forms: printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, design, photography, video, animation, net & interactive art, graffiti art, and electronic music. Although first and foremost he considers himself a graphic artist, Andrej Marjanovic works a lot in both multimedia and in many classic arts techniques (painting, sculpture, and drawing). But it is less known that he was also a graffiti artist during the emerging Skopje graffiti culture of the 1990s, working under many pseudonyms (НДРЈ/NDRJ, ЧКЉ Кру/ CHKLJ Crew, Право гето/Real ghetto). Since about the same time, he was part of the birth of the Macedonian underground electronic music scene under various pseudonyms (NDRJ, Partybreaking Inc., Кисела куќа/Acid House), using sampling as his main constructive technique. From 2000 onwards, he works professionally in branding, graphic design, web design, photography, video production, audio production, and animation. With regard to technique, Andrej Marjanovic is always interested in experimentation, innovation, and intermediality. In his interartistic and intermedia fine art explorations, he is often inspired by music, comic books, street art, computer art, video art, video games, and film. Whatever the technique, medium, or application, his art stylistically gravitates toward the minimalist, symbolic, and abstract, always grounded on deeply deliberated concepts, a critical approach, autoreferentiality, and humor. He was born and raised in Skopje, but from 2014 he lives in the Prespa area.
