Painting, Oil on Canvas
Size: 48 W x 60 H x 2 D in
In Puerto Rico, the Jíbaro is an icon of the culture. Traditionally, they are known as the poor, uneducated, mountain or countryside peoples who farm the land in traditional ways. The Puerto Rican Jíbaro is known for their music, wardrobe, hospitality, self-sufficiency, and wisdom. Today the word Jíbaro represents a “true and genuine Puerto Rican”. This painting depicts a reimagined version of the sculpture, Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño, by artist Tomás Batista. The Painter replaces the faces of Batista’s figures with those of her family members, and places monster-like masks over two of the children’s faces. The masks reference those made by artist Angel Sánchez Ortiz, who designs masks based on the Puerto Rican folkloric Vejigantes, for Carnival Festivals. Overall, this painting focuses on family dynamics surrounding sexuality and culture. The masked figures are the gay daughters who live to make their parents proud, the father looks away in denial as a tactic of self-preservation, the heterosexual daughter (who is obliviously unaware of her privilege) smiles at the viewer, and the all-knowing mother looks down at her child somberly.

Samantha Rosado is a Puerto Rican, cisgendered, gay woman who works primarily with oil paint on canvas. Though she was drawn to the arts in her youth, she began oil painting after graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 2015. In Summer 2016, Samantha attended a Puerto Rican tiple (guitar) making workshop at Trinity College. She was later offered a Hilla Rebay Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in Fine Art and Studio Art. At Trinity College, Samantha found interest in the challenge of color, space development and compositional relationships. She carried this interest through her assistantship at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and her MFA at Louisiana State University. Samantha is a painter, poet, and storyteller. She uses humor in her work to create captivating imagery and rhythm to guide the viewer through a story of directional line and color.
