This painting is inspired by works of Francis Bacon and is named after a character from Johann Wolfgang's von Göthe poem ''The Erlking'' (''The Elf King'') "Erlkönig" has been called Goethe's "most famous ballad". The poem has been set to music by several composers, most notably by Franz Schubert.
