About The Artwork

This painting is a part of my upcoming collection "I Was There". The collection represents apocalyptical times and their aftermath, post-apocalyptic imagery. Every painting is created the way that newspaper creates imagery and wrinkles. That way it gets trapped under the paint and heavy gloss gel. An archive of a society, to some degree civilized, modern that had fallen. In some paintings like in this particular one called "The Fallen" there are words preserved, sort of like clues of the archive. Words that define the pre-existing society. The palm trees are very strong which survive dryness, winds, storms (which I describe in my other painting "Survivors", not part of this collection) and are also landmarks of Los Angeles where I reside and create. The Fallen paints a sunset with palm trees in their natural healthy state. The sunset of civilization that is, not of nature itself. Man must be careful and look around to understand that nature can live without him, but he cannot survive without it. The Fallen are ignorant to this very fact. To add to this, I would like to mention that newspaper is torn and placed sporadically, without much thought and intention, so that what is meant to be seen, comes out however it is meant to come out. I merely look for some key words or images once it is laid down and already glued. I sometimes then build the rest around it, if I find that something interesting - if it pops out. That way also in this painting one can notice a duck in flight over the palm trees. I noticed it once the painting was finished. I then researched the spirit meaning of duck. It gets interesting.

My name is Matej Anzin. I was born in Slovenia in 1979. In 2004 I migrated to the US. In Slovenia I graduated from Industrial Design at The School for Design and Photography in the capitol city, Ljubljana. My pursuit is expression of purity, rather than purity of expression. Appreciation for life, human psyche and everything natural is the drive for creating my own artwork, whether that be a drawing, a technical draft, a painting, a song, an essay, an idea for a movie (yes, I have those as well), or even a cooking recipe (yes, even those). I see a chance for art in everything. When I paint and draw I enjoy playing with the concept of shadow and light, and in that, I may use thick multiple layers of paint. Or, I may feel very technical when using pencil to draw portraits or objects, and am extremely orderly-oriented when I use rulers and a compass to create geometric patterns. I mainly construct my patterns starting with a circular shape, because I am attracted to completeness and perfection, and circle itself represents that. *I recently embarked on a new journey of abstract painting. For years I struggled with letting go and my art displayed that. Everything was very orderly, organized, realistic, although colorful which signified that there was a lot of life in me, at times extremely hard to contain it, so I let it out in my collection "I Was There". I created a surface of images and wrinkles and then let the paint drip over and run its course. I merely help it like its god with adding water to its life and watch it live. **Then came the collection "Numbers" where I took upon a mixture of order and chaos expressing the impact of the digital era. Thank you for your reading.
