One copy The painting participated in the Luxembourg Art Prize competition. ---------------------- Artist Statement In my work I reinterpret famous paintings of great masters. I like imaginary dialogues with them and suggest modern interpretations of their ideas. What if we imagine the world in reverse? What seems established, unshakable to us, is just a point of view shared centuries ago. And if, centuries ago, artists had taken modern approach, those paintings would now be regarded as the established concept. The world is constantly evolving, and classic subjects have lost much of their relevance. In creating the triptych, I was thinking how Bosch's legendary painting might look today. For example, why couldn’t Adam and Eve be black? ---------------------- About artwork The triptych is part of the "What if…?" series of works, where I am trying to answer one of the most important questions in my art, what if we imagine the world in reverse? For centuries, the most famous artists have been white men. Their muses have always been white, too. I fantasise what would happen if the world's masterpieces had depicted black people. The painting is an interpretation of the famous work by Hieronymus Bosch (1500-1510). I start a dialogue with him and conjecture his vision of the world in the context of modern realities. The painting represents three stages of the mankind development. In my vi-sion Adam and Eve were black, which gives an alternative interpretation of the Bible and is entirely different from all depictions of the first people. On the first part of the triptych we can see an ideal world. Paradise. The one created by God. Adam and Eve live among flowers, butterflies and birds. On the second part of the triptych civilization is undergoing development. The vast expanse of the garden is filled with nude men and women who are enjoying berries and fruit, are playing with birds and animals, splashing in the water. Carefree merrymaking hovering in the composition is further underlined by the light evenly spread along the whole surface and bright intense colors. Having partaken of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, people started making other creatures. The humankind grows, plays and takes care not only of animals but of robots. Under the impact of the technical progress people themselves are gradually becoming identical, merge, becoming faceless. Against the background of grass and flowers the dark figures of human beings are becoming more and more shadow-like. On the third picture there is an alternative inferno. The inferno where the sinners are not punished. It is a world dominated by robots. And they no longer play with people in the way people used to play with animals. The focus is shifted to artificial intellect. And now the new God is a machine. The colors have grown dim. The sky is filled with aviation. Current flowing through numerous cables. The clock is a symbol of accelerating time. Instead of the life fountain there is a working mechanism. Hither and thither there are plants but they are doomed under the wheels of progress.
