Societies of ancient times used to consider the sun their protector and a divine power. People would live their lives according to the rise and fall of the sun. However since the invention of electrical light (and other types of lamps) the sun has lost its mythical powers. And we wake before sunrise to rush in the crowded streets of big cities artificially illuminated at all times. The woman in this painting is the allegorical representation electrical light, and of the fatigue caused by light pollution.
