About The Artwork

Original contemporary vertical still life oil painting on canvas. This colorful paintings expressive style invokes curiosity and engagement. With its strong vertical lines and rich hues a passionate portrayal comes to life through common objects. Inspired by the simplicity of the forms and the organic beauty of nature, a wintering hydrangea plant partners with some functional vessels. Seeking to exaggerate the natural hues with in the arrangement a beautiful palette of jewel tone hues emerged. Each brushstroke was thoughtfully placed with the intention of adding texture and a sense of aliveness to the final painting. Picking up on the more linear cast shadows and lines within the table and background, a unique sense of unity between space and form developed. This oil painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas. The sides of the canvas have been painted so the artwork may be hung framed or unframed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
