'NOT 30%'-
Addressing the gender imbalance that women are only represented 30% of the time in the art world.
My series (in triptychs) represents those who are not being given the opportunity to be seen. A cross over from my Santos series show women artists coming out of the shadows and empowering themselves to be recognized. The use of dress making patterns symbolize a rebirth of women across the spectrum not just in the art world, stating that they are not just to be viewed as servants to the home or second class citizens. When did we lose power and position in society? Even in the most suppressed conditions documented through history women had their positions of power, surely we are not going going backwards? In one of the paintings the house symbolizes museums, galleries, fairs and collectors that could be more proactive in supporting women artists! The framing is equally important, three of which are made from reclaimed copper and the rest edged with metal supporting straps used in the building trade, making claim to our equal rights in society, after all we are the hinges that support and are givers of life.
