The Hug’s Fear appears as a new possibility for the Persona Series. In this series and in the others created from 2019 onwards, the suitcase metaphor is used to represent everyday life. In interior spaces, the still-closed suitcases began a life as characters. His coming and going function was suspended. As a result of the pandemic period, many feelings emerged that were difficult to deal with. However, what most caught my attention was the impossibility of relationships and social life, justified by a greater reason: caring for others and self-preservation. The pain spread over the countless losses of life, worsening due to the impossibility of contact, due to measures created to contain the worst. Before Persona, like other paintings by Suitcase Project, they were developed with just one character. Now, one more element makes up the scenario. The human figure is presented in the narrative, appearing in whole or in parts, to play opposite the suitcase. Opposite feelings are opposed, as in a meeting between “good” and “evil” to measure forces, a war between “angels and demons”. The breath that a hug could give at this moment was forbidden. The freedom to come and go was suspended, replaced by a virtual life, translated by cell phone screens and screens. Inside the suitcase, a personage of the painting entitled “The Hug’s Fear”, these and many other reflections.

Odette Boudet is a visual artist from Rio de Janeiro. In 2018 she moved to Porto, Portugal. Master in Plastic Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (2022) and Graduated in cinema from Federal Fluminense University (1988), she has been dedicated to painting since 2011. The artist-researcher has presented her production in the cultural scene of the north of Portugal and in Brazil. The research in painting begins with the theme of movement, displacement and affective memory, through the metaphor of a suitcase. The theme expands to the relationships between the space of painting and the cinema screen, where she finds arguments to address current issues such as immigration and violence. Thought and gesture are crossed by a camera.
