The Igbo Landing: Paradise Painting

The Igbo Landing: Paradise Island Legend has it, that a ship filled with Igbo captives, on their way to a life of tortuous slavery, broke free and took control of the ship carrying them, from their captors. Knowing that they were within their captors territories, they grounded the ship on a beach. Then, to the dismay of their captors, they raised a chant in their native tongue and then marched into the sea, to their certain death. Their captors watched in horror as they drowned, not because they cared for the lives lost, rather because their 'commodity' had slipped out of their grasp. I imagine it is this same commodification of their humanity, and a determined need to assert their personhood, that made these captives take such drastic measures. They would rather be free spirits, than enslaved bodies. As a person of igbo extraction myself, I completely recognised that strong willed spirit of my people. The idea of autonomous personhood is one that is very present in our culture. A deep knowing and understanding of your value, well before any ideas of community. Community built on the basis of that autonomous humanity, though the imposition of many other cultures has tried to wipe this out. I believe it is from this thought process that such statements as, "Igbo ewenghi eze (the Igbo has not one supreme king)," stemmed from. Re-imagining that beach as a place of beauty, imagination, strength and bravery, of rebirth and freedom, led to the birth of this painting.
