About The Artwork

At least once a day, it occurs to me that painting is a dead art form. So is reading. It is just a matter of time until books are only found in museums. It is only appropriate that, in this picture, the library, the final repository of a dead art form, is only appreciated by a skeleton. The decaying volumes on the shelves have become home to countless little creatures. I think these animals lend the picture a little magic, as if there are great wonders hidden away in those dusty old books. The butterflies are a reference to the theme song of the PBS television show Reading Rainbow, which, incidentally, was cancelled because inspiring kids to read was no longer considered important. The golden beetle is from Poe’s story “The Gold-Bug,” which is about a buried treasure to found by decoding a series of encrypted riddles written in invisible ink.
