About The Artwork

What is genuinely real? Rarely do we come to question what we see with our own eyes. It feels so tangible, yet we might just be alienated by every experiences we come across in life which shapes our believes and ideas. This reflection triggered this painting. I was born in France and before moving to Australia I pictured a dreamlike country with wild, harsh, open land and surfers. I now often wonder if being an expat influences what i see and how i see it. Do I only experience my reality amongst all the others ? I wanted to stitch together my take on an Australian Landscape and an inner landscape questioning reality. Using a mise en abime, I juxtaposed a seascape and an interior scene which represents a landscape of my mind. The vase is decorated with symbols of my hometown while the silver wattle is to me a link between my parent's garden and the origins of this tree, Australia. I am trying to understand my environment and choices. Although i wanted to push my reflection even further and decided to paint a life-size palette and a brush. It is perhaps a homage to Magritte’s floating rock in his Castle of the Pyrenees. One thing is sure I wanted to intrigue and bring the viewer back to a third reality; It is all an illusion, it is only paint on a piece of linen.

I was born in 1986 in Montpellier, France. Straight after university, i embarked on an adventure and left France. Spent about 9 years in Australia. In 2016, I decided to return to my native country to study the old masters and to dedicate myself to painting. I am now back in Australia, a full-time painter living and working in Melbourne area. I have crossed paths with great artists who have greatly influenced my work, such as the sculptor Éric Chatalin and the painter Nushka. What is the aim of my artworks? I never set out to create a particular response from the viewer, it is definitely out of my control. However, if for a moment, anyone feels at the sight of one of my paintings time is slowed down then It would be the ultimate dream for me. I like to think that people can escape through my paintings. Contemporary life offers very little respite. Painting can be a cure: by slowing down time and creating connections between people, sharing experiences. Today I am exploring the structure of figuration, between realism and abstraction, I seek the necessary balance for a painting to exist by itself, no need for interpretation or meaning. It's a sensory experience, it is alive, and I am definitely, for life.
