ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece was based on one of the innumerable pictures I have taken at a Renaissance Faire Medieval Festival over the years. I find it very interesting to roam the Festival and observe people's expressions, how they are invested not just in their costumes, but also in the character they represent. These places provide invaluable material for reference and the study of human nature. The rich and varied textures of the costumes also allow me to emphasize the brush work, that I eventually infuse in the background as well.

Christophe Vacher is a two-time Emmy Award Winner and two-time Annie Award Nominee who has provided artwork for the Animation industry and most major Hollywood Studios since 1989 as a painter, designer and Art Director. He worked on movies such as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, Dinosaur, Treasure Planet, Shark Tale, Enchanted, “9” and Despicable Me. He has been Art Directing Hasbro’s Transformers TV series for 7 years. Originally French, he now lives in California. His personal paintings can be seen permanently in several galleries and various collections in Europe and the United States. He has given numerous lectures at various events and universities across the US and France, including the San Francisco Academy or Arts, the University of California in Berkeley and the California State University of Northridge. The style of Christophe’s personal imagery has multiple influences; from old painting schools like the Hudson River, The American Realists, The great American Illustrators, The Romantics and the European Symbolists for their grandiose, theatrical scenery, to more contemporary artists like Sandorfi, Beksinski, Ugarte and The Visionaries (Les Visionnaires) in France. Travel and music are a large part of his inspiration as well.
