About the Artist

Mona Dworkin

United States

My mixed media paintings are rooted in early experiences growing up in Westchester County, a suburb just outside New York City, where childhood friendships exposed me to stark wealth disparities and racial divides. These formative moments continue to shape my perspective and artistic voice.
Following heart surgery several years ago, my paintings underwent a noticeable transformation. They became more vibrant and emotionally charged, centering on
women’s strength in the face of adversity. These works serve both as personal reminders to persevere and as broader reflections on resilience. The mixed media
portraits often explore duality—depicting contemporary women with layered identities, revealing both vulnerability and strength, struggle and endurance.
Across more than four decades, my artistic practice has spanned mixed media painting; incorporating of collected ephemera, handweaving and photography. My work functions as a visual narrative, examining the complexity of human relationships and the enduring capacity for resilience.
I received a BS in Art Education from the State University at New Paltz, NY. Raised in Hartsdale NY, I reside in Richmond, Virginia.
