About The Artwork

Happy to discuss future commissions. I was commissioned to create a new East window after winning a competition run by the Fabric Committee of St. Brandon’s Parochial Church Council. This medieval church had been devastated by fire in 1998. It was rebuilt (under architect Christopher Downs) and the interior restored (by Martin Stancliffe and Ulrike Knox), giving a light and modern feel to the building. Some members of the Fabric Committee wanted to retain clear glazing with its view of the landscape beyond. Others wanted the East Window to provide a focal point for worship within the restored building. My aim was to reconcile these two desires in a bold and colourful design; to reflect the combination of ancient and modern within the building through the use of traditional techniques with a contemporary approach. The East window celebrates their Irish Saint’s voyage to far off lands, in search of the Garden of Eden, the earthly Paradise (known as Behest). The name ‘Brancepeth’ literally means ‘Brandon’s path’; the Golden Legend describes his seven-year journey to find Paradise with his company of monks. Although there is no historical evidence to support the account, it is thought that Brandon’s earthly Paradise was found in the Western Ocean, on lands such as the Canary Islands.
