About The Artwork
The 'The Places' series was inspired by Truman Capote's first non-fiction novel, 'In Cold blood'. The Clutter family of Kansas Holcomb, USA, has been thoroughly scrutinized for the actual murder of Perry Smith and Richard Eugene Hickock, and the content itself is very interesting, but I concentrated on the house of Clutter family, where life is portrayed and where major events take place. The house is the place where personal tragedy occurred, and at the same time the dark side of society is revealed as the result of Perry Smith. The image of the house in the picture is composed of the living room, the bedroom and the basement and looks like other ordinary homes. But the fact that it is in fact the actual place where the murder took place gives an uncommon impression. Parts of space that are calm and unheated are linked to each person and events to complete a set of mansions. In order to be able to feel each space without depending on the prescribed hierarchy or order, the places in the house are formed so that they can be found in all directions of the canvas. And the boundaries of the space are broken to become a surreal space. This work has no formal direction, so it is good to display it horizontally on the floor or table to appreciate in different directions.

Dabin Lee is an artist based in Seoul. Her main themes are emotions that people commonly experience but are not easily revealed, such as depression, fear and anxiety. As a child, Dabin explored the inner dark parts of her depression and used art as a means of expressing and resolving emotions. Mostly her works are inspired by portrait photography, medieval religious paintings, literature, and expressed using rough and thick textures, spilling and spreading accidental effects. And her paintings are expanding the range of expression to media such as body painting, photographs, videos and performances. The beginning of Dabin’s work was to relieve personal feelings. But as her work expanded, she realized that it was contraindicated to reveal dark emotions in Korean society. Since then, her goal has been to let viewers see their dark feelings in her works and to face them.
