I was inspired to paint this after taking a cruise around Galveston Island and finding this amazing relic, the SS Selma. Steel shortages during World War I led the US to build experimental concrete ships, the largest of which was the SS Selma, today partially submerged in Galveston Bay. I want the viewers to know her history (Google), smell the salt air, revel in the waters and skies surrounding her and appreciate what happens here right before sunset. I painted "The Relic" in oil with a dreamy impressionistic quality which was easy to achieve with oil as the medium.
