The River Naver, Sutherland Painting

The River Naver runs through the glens in northern Scotland in which the atrocity of the Highland Clearances was carried out in 18th to early 19th centuries. Crofters were forcibly evicted from their homes in order for the landowner (in this case, Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland) in order to turn the land over for sheep farming. Strath (glen) Naver is sparsely inhabited now, but people are moving back, however, there is an air of melancholy as the memory of the Clearances is strong.
