About The Artwork

The Sanctuary is a mixed media poppy painting on canvas with layered collage, pen and ink, and uplifting brush strokes. Every summer I watch the poppies come up in my backyard, and explode with brilliant colored orange and red flowers. It's inevitable that I must paint them, and The Sanctuary is a glimpse of their spectacular beauty in this flower painting! In my work I am trying to be free. Free of thought, free to feel inspiration, free of the constraints of this world, and at the same time, freely expressing it’s beauty. If you look closely, you’ll find all kinds of beauty and humor in the collaged scraps beneath the painted orange flowers. This painting is just me playing. I painted dancing textures, and collaged poetry I love underneath the mixed media poppies. It's a labor of love and energy, and a tribute to these brilliant bursts of flowers I see in my yard each spring. I hope they will bring great joy to your home!

My artistic medium is mixed media on canvas. I like the way words mix with images, and often add Chinese take-out containers, chocolate wrappers and torn pages of books to my paintings that can be serendipitous to the viewer. If you look closely, you’ll find all kinds of surprises. I am an experiential artist, meaning, I typically develop a relationship with my subject before painting it. To paint snow-covered mountains, I hike to the top and ski down. To paint aspen trees, I run through their shimmering leaves on mountain trails. To paint ravens, I watch them fly overhead in a desert canyon, and listen to the sound of their wings. When these images start simmering in my brain, this is the seed of my work. I hope that my work will bring joy to you. Or inspiration, or sweetness or something meaningful as you look around my site … Thanks for stopping by.
