These mountains are spooky, don't let those pretty pink clouds fool you! Not only because the Lost Dutchman's gold is hidden in them, but because of how this painting came about. My great grandma Helen painted dozens of scenes from her native Arizona, and I just so happened to come across two old canvas boards with her sketches on them! Imagine my surprise when I figured out this sketch was of the Superstition Mountains, which I had just learned the lore about from the Astonishing Legends podcast a few weeks before. Spooky! That space girl thinks so too.

Acrylic + paper embellishments on canvas board, 16x20 inches (20x24 framed)

I use Golden Acrylics for their quality not only in paint handling but also for their archival properties. The Space Cowgirl is created using tracing paper and pencil and applied with an acrylic medium.

SPACE COWGIRLS // This series is an exploration into themes of nostalgia, loss, and preservation through anachronistic dreamscapes. The series is set in the southwest because I fell in love with that part of the US after taking a trip into southern Utah and learning that my great grandma, who lived on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, also loved to paint those landscapes.
