Malinalli, of Nahua descent, was sold as a teenager by her mother and stepfather to slave traders, from whom she learned the Mayan language. She was later given to the “conqueror” Hernán Cortés, for whom she served as an interpreter. She soon learned Spanish and was baptized as Marina, but the Nahuas called her Malintzin. Doña Marina had a son by Cortés called Martín. He symbolizes the first true “mestizo” Mexican. The Malinche is a cultural icon in Mexico but in a negative way. Although she is the “uterus” of miscegenation – the permanent union of different races and cultures – she is also, unfairly, a symbol of the “betrayal” of indigenous peoples, and this is a lot for one woman to bear.
