About The Artwork

**PLEASE NOTE** - This piece was done over an old painting I purchased from a thrift shop, and therefore the back is quite ragged (see pics). --- Originally started from the figure, this piece didn't quite want to finish itself. It sat for a year or two, with me giving an occasional glance at it asking: what's up? Nothing. In the summer of 2018, I was preparing for my residency at The Grünewald Guild in Southern Washington State, and the last thing I grabbed was this painting, thinking hmmmm. Once established at the residency, I began to refine the figure (middle) again and again, but something just wasn't working. I put it aside and turned my attention elsewhere. The next evening, I was sitting in my studio with just a dim light on, and out of the corner of my eye I saw some shapes in the shadows falling on this painting, and thought, "woman cop dog." I snapped a quick few pics, and it was off to the races. The multiple birds (there are seven, I believe) came in as the shape of the work took form around the woman and dog, winging their way in from various collections of my drawings and the ether. At the end, all it took was a little white curving space (bottom) to satisfy the piece's urge to be finished. This was one that felt like it almost painted itself, with my hand and spirit along for the ride. _______________________________ | THE ART OF EVERYTHING | T A O - E

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at: www.whatifind.com
