About The Artwork

This is a local beachbreak that's famous in Newport Beach. It's called The Wedge or Dirty ol' Wedge. Dangerous and beautiful, this impression shows the take-off spot at left where you'd bodysurf and goes all the way through to the portion of the beach called cylinders which doubles up and crashed into very shallow water. When you stare at the painting it moves quite significantly. This effect happens in the sky of one of my other paintings (Balboa Church), as well.

Philip Ryder Dunn once received a history degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Then he completed a master’s in journalism from the University of Southern California. He had a career as a journalist, marketing consultant, non-fiction author, and college media professor. Dunn paints impressions of the ocean and various scenes of wonder. He combines photography and wandering to examine what’s right in front of his nose. He also paints juxtapositions of local nature themes with dreamscapes. Dunn writes poetry almost every day. For recreation, he plays ice hockey and pickleball, and surfs almost every day. He has three delightful children.
