(Artists Union of Romania), Vrancea branch From personal exhibitions: "DUET" 2015 Laura Elena Dumitru paints with acrylic on canvas or cardboard, creating a universe of contrived shapes that rather emerge from an inner reflection on human condition. Her characters do not seem to be based on live models, although somewhere in the background there is certainly a real-life inspiration. Some of the artist's compositions reveal her fascination with the universe of performing arts from which she draws dynamic portraits of performers: dancers and players. The continuous, unsteady motion of shapes, the impossibility of pinning them down in time and space, are exciting artistic pretexts for Laura Elena Dumitru. Other works capture on canvas portraits of young girls or women and the artist seems rather inclined to study their psychology and dynamics of feelings, as reflected by their faces and attitudes. The message that comes through from Laura Elena Dumitru's entire painting is a continuous suggestion of illusion. Art critic, Luiza Barcan "EXPRESSION" 2016 Laura Dumitru continues her series of fantasies - either strange characters landing on the canvas directly from a daydream or suggestive painted metaphors. The poetry of Laura's symbolic figurative paintings starts with the titles that she gives to her works and subtly shrouds her compositions devised as picto-poems in their own right. The visible universe, the exterior, the surrounding nature, are nearly absent from this series of works that focus almost exclusively on the artist's inner world - a world from which images emerge personifying ideas or feelings concealed in the layers of the subconscious. Memories seem to play a major role in this anamnesis elicited by almost all of Laura Dumitru's compositions. As a matter of fact, they are best illustrated by one particular painting featuring a house with translucent walls through which visual, auditory and even olfactory suggestions diffuse, because memory keeps all of them unaltered. This house of memories, a “musical” house, is obviously a space of childhood, communicating with the invisible world through connections that adults lose at some point.
