About The Artwork

The image that inspired this painting is from an illuminated bestiary manuscript titled “The Flower of Nature” by Jacob van Maerlant circa 1350. A bestiary is a descriptive or anecdotal treatise on various real or mythical kinds of animals, especially medieval work with a moralizing tone. While bestiaries were meant to be informative, the illustrations very often very inaccurate. This was because the illustrators had never seen the animals they were drawings and were relying only off of descriptions from others. I became interested in what a bestiary image would look like if they were actually accurate and detailed. I chose to update the image of the oyster because the original seemed the most comical and inaccurate to me. The original image of the oyster included a face with a snarling beak.
