About The Artwork

Lear's Macaws (Anodorhynchus leari), named after nonsense poet and bird illustrator Edward Lear, 1812-1888. Lear is particularly renowned for his illustrations of birds of the parrot family, and of course for popularizing the limerick. This macaw occurs only in northern Brazil, with total population size probably less than 1000: it's currently classified as Endangered. Alkyd oils on board, 50x50 cm. The painting draws loosely on a photo by Rick-Elis Simpson. The full limerick is written on the back of the painting: There once were two birds in a dream Who said "We are not as we seem: Though we may appear meek, Cold revenge we will wreak," Those azulous birds of my dream. No, "azulous" is not a valid Scrabble word.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My art imagines what birds might say if they could speak our language. They would fear and hate us, surely: we are fast destroying their planet. They would tell us to stop before it's too late. But perhaps they'd frame that with love. I think they would frame it with love. Website: https://www.raphus.co.uk/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raphus.artist/ Contact: raphus.art@gmail.com
