About The Artwork

This painting is inspired by Ad Reinhardt’s “black” paintings and is reminiscent of early Aboriginal Dot Painting. The slight texture resulting from the application of impasto paint layers throws back to many Abstract Expressionist painters of the 50s. The impasto is not too heavy and does not create sculpture. Rather, it creates a barely textured painting that can be seen as light hits the painting. With small heavily colored peaked dots of yellow, red, and blue are deconstructed over the very dark blue—virtually black painted background. Upon a closer look, it is night sky with stars blinking from the Pleiades. It is isolated, varnished and UV protected against sunlight. The varnish is removable for cleaning when and if it is required. It comes with a certificate of authenticity, and a pair of cotton archival gloves for handling. Please note: In context, the photographs of this painting are merely representational and should be viewed as illustrative only because the original is much richer and robust than any photograph can show.

I consider myself a Lyrical Abstract painter, and my passion is trying to create pictures expressionistically. My point of view and methods are nothing new, but—I think—my paintings represent re-emerging sensibilities from our recent past. In this way, there is nothing new about my painting, except me as a painter. I paint spontaneously. The ideal of spontaneous painting is almost impossible. But, when the possible happens, the result is a good picture. It is an authentic picture. I think we all judge a good picture from a bad one based on this notion. I paint with gestures evoking time/space in motion, emotion, and undefined archaic inspiration from the invisible signs, symbols, and memories understood at some level by all of us. I typically build up layers and often deconstruct and paint-over until the painting is finished. For me, this process is troublesome at first, then finally contemplative and satisfying. I worked as a Newspaper and Magazine Writer, Photographer, and Stained and Leaded Glass Artist. I am a member of the Cleveland Artist Registry, and can also be found on the Artists of Cleveland and Cleveland Arts Events Websites. Through these sources, you can find my upcoming exhibitions, and how I can be contacted.
