A trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which adopts injured animals and cares for them indefinitely, inspired this painting. I loved the negative space between their necks and heads, and wanted to paint the soft fur and design on their lanky, graceful, muscular bodies. Somehow I want the viewer to realize the majesty and dignity of all wild creatures. My style is not quite realistic, though close. Effort is required to keep layering more paint. Every layer builds and in this case each layer was dried before beginning the next layer. Adding the blue-ish shadows under their bodies was the last thing I did, and it made all the difference in the roundness, as well as leaving the light on the tops of their bodies.

I love moving beyond any preconceived ideas of what is possible. I love painting or fashioning the life I live, whether it is a new surface or a blank wall, a subtle flavor or a zinger to the taste buds. We must put on or thinking caps . Let’s see, instead of” “thinking caps”, we can put on a striped violet chapeaux with braided fringe and beaded bands, antennas and proboscus. Think colorful and elongated, puffy and bushy. Think cerebral and cloudy, misty and silver gray. Think animated and silly, magical and surprise. Think pastoral and serene or dusty road and stilted house. Think outlines and space or curly ques and petals. Think shrouded and mysterious or concrete and stones. Think slashing, sun laden, beach tinted and fishy. Think animal patterns, fuzzy caterpillars, gauzy butterflies, and sultry snakes. Have fun. Why be ordinary? I challenge all of us to blow the world away with the art we fashion.
