About The Artwork

This work is inspired partially by Joan Mitchell and Frances Bacon although you wouldn't really know to look at it. I worked very quickly and finished it in a very short time using bright colors and mixing them while painting. I hope it will be cathartic somehow to look at. Its bright and lively, however there is also something brooding in the background.

My focus is to create art that depicts change and transformation of matter. Im fascinated, in particular, with how time is involved in aesthetics. Regardless of other variables, time and timing are powerful. My work tends to look as if objects are exploding or imploding, contracting or expanding, separating or mixing, being created or getting destroyed. I want my paintings to seem in motion or ‘on the way’ to something. This can often be achieved by working quickly and intuitively. On the other hand, I am also interested in matter and objects that are changed over long periods of time, often despite standing still. Patina and/or degradation on leather, metal, fabric, roads, rock, hillsides and faces. It’s fascinating that artwork that depicts this successfully will trigger memories and feelings long forgotten. Likely due to this interest and focus on time, I tend to either paint very quickly and improvise without thinking too much, completing a painting in minutes, or I will keep a canvas around for weeks or months and let it sit and collect its own built up layers from whatever I’m working on otherwise, allowing it to gain some sort of character of its own. Often the two methods come together, one being a backdrop for the other.
