Robert Jepson is an English artist living in the Isle of Man, painting primarily in oil on canvas. He specialises in Historic Marine Art, covering the age of sail in meticulously researched work. After school, Robert joined the Royal Navy and committed to a 16 year career and for the past 30 years has owned his own cruising yacht. He cruises the Western Isles of Scotland for several weeks each year, combined with his Naval career this has given him an intimate knowledge of the sea. Coming from a creative family, his father and uncle were artists and his grandfather was a professional musician, art was always his ultimate destiny. A spell of 4 years painting professionally after leaving the Navy was suspended for a considerable time due to life circumstances and he ended up once again in corporate employment. Eventually, he realised that life is too short to withhold ones dreams and so he reignited his art career
Artist Statement
My heart has always belonged to the sea. To me, she is an alluring and unforgiving mistress — magnificent, fickle, and at times dangerous, facets learned from intimate experience! It has shaped my life, my memories, and above all, my art. I grew up surrounded by my father's maritime paintings and his extensive library of nautical history. So, from an early age, developed a fascination with the ships and seafarers of the Age of Sail.
Today, working in oils, I create original compositions based on historical research, combining accurate ship construction and rigging, aided in part by the extensive nautical library inherited from my father. and the portrayal of the drama of wind, sea and light in its many moods. Aside from the historic side of my work, I also paint general seascapes, sometimes venturing into surrealism.
Abstract painting is a smaller side of my work, but one I pursue with enthusism, inspired primarily by cosmic nebulae. After a time painting realism I yearn to paint abstracts and vice versa!
Ultimately, I want collectors and viewers to feel my connection with the sea, perhaps a memory stirs, a sense of awe is sparked, or simply quiet reflection.
