About The Artwork

Shany Porras is an artist who translates music into abstract paintings, drawing inspiration from the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of various musical and visual genres. As an immigrant, she uses her ability to translate Spanish and English as fuel for her intuitive, creative process. The results are translations of one of her native tongues, music, into artworks that invite viewers to pause and reflect deeply. Porras holds a B.A. and B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Rice University and has been affiliated with prestigious art organizations, including the National Association of Women Artists, Inc., the Cambridge Art Association, the Guild of Berkshire Artists, and the Berkshire Artists Association. In 2023, Lee Bank acquired one of Porras's notable pieces, "Translation No. 1 of Nocturne Op. 15 No. 3 in G Minor by F. Chopin," demonstrating the recognition and value of her work. She has received accolades for her work, including an Honorable Mention for her "Music Translations" series in the Conception Art Show in Boston. Her most recent solo show, "Abstract Harmony:Dissonance" garnered recognition by the Berkshire Eagle. Porras's art has been featured in various publications and exhibitions, garnering attention from critics and audiences alike.

Shany Porras is a creative translator who takes one abstract language, music, and translates it into another abstract language, abstract painting. Many painters create art that is inspired by music; however, Shany's process of creating art that is inspired by music goes beyond inspiration. Shany explains, "As I plan to start a painting, I dive into the music mindfully and study the music scores. I render key phrases, runs, or themes as I translate the sounds visually in my sketchbook. Different chords and phrases translate to unique colors, textures, and styles, resulting in truly unique paintings."
