About The Artwork

Many of my paintings come from mind wanderings that seem to take on a variation of surreal meaning. They started many years ago as I hitch-hiked around the USA, long before I took up painting. I used to sit in the passenger seat imagining trees falling in huge forest swathes as we passed through them, ghosts of native North Americans and pioneers floating in the air. Painting eventually became a way of capturing those wanderings. Tree Airplane Trap is one of a large group of my paintings featuring airplanes. I used to sit in my flat at the Elephant and Castle watching the airplanes ‘stacking’ to the south and then passing by on their way into Heathrow. At night, they would glow on the underside from the orange London streetlights. They would seem to pass through the branches of the tree in the park opposite and I would imagine them being trapped by the branches. That place of ‘visual’ thought is where I base most of my paintings now.
