Trees at St Just Churchyard Painting

These paintings are a complete extension of myself, I learnt how to paint at St Martins School of art 25 years ago. And since then I have never stopped. I was told to display on canvas what was essential to me about what I was working on and ignore the rest. My first ‘proper’ painting ended up hanging in the Royal Academy in the Pick of the New Painters exhibition that year. I have not looked back since then. Painting is my life and these paintings are who I am. Trees have always delighted me and filled me with respect. I am spellbound by their grace and beauty as they rise endlessly towards the sky. Through them I am able to express myself in ways that normally would not be possible as they inspire a passion in me that nothing else does. I am continually astonished by this extraordinary and fundamental aspect of the natural world. I was brought up in Cornwall, but now I live and work in London, there are still trees here and I spend my life portraying them in any style and any medium and any aspect that feels right, and no matter where I am there will always be these essential elements of nature that guide me and fascinate me and drive me. Other aspects of nature also interest me greatly , the sea, the sky, the landscape, I give myself to everything a but trees are what takes my breath away.
