About The Artwork

This was one of a series of breakthrough paintings for me, where I had been trying so hard and suddenly it just flowed. Almost pure instinctual expression through lines, marks and colour. Watercolour is so imeadiate and delicate, the brush needs barely a moment on the paper and when more needed to be said in small marks, I used my ink dip pen to move the paint around a little. I am trying to communicate with the viewer on a level deeper than words and recognisable images, but through my instinctive, abstract, expressive marks.

I am a Scottish artist born in Dumfries in 1976. After working as a self-taught painter for twenty years, while home educating two children and building an off-grid home, I returned to education and have just graduated with a first class honours degree in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee and four prizes (see below). During my time at art school I have expanded my practice into performance, sculpture, sound, film and installation.
