Description This work combines black and white photography with Layers of color (acrylic paint). Subject I never actually saw a tumbleweed until I moved to Colorado. The only place I had ever seen them was in movies. The first time I actually saw one rolling across the road in Colorado I stopped to take a closer look and always thought about them as a subject for my art. Inspiration What drew me into the tumbleweeds, as a subject for this series of works, is the amazing textures and detail of the branches which create the shapes of the tumbleweeds. The stem of the tumbleweed is like the heart with large arteries emanating out and progressively getting smaller. Focus and Process I find the larger branches most interesting and so the focus of the work. They are not only the infrastructure of the plant but beautiful. I direct the viewer to the areas of focus by removing anything in the background. I also use layers of color to partially mask areas of the subject while still allowing the entire plant to be seen. The black and white photographs are high contrast to accentuate the branches. Techniques I digitally photographed the tumbleweeds in my studio with a white background to make isolating the image a non-issue. I then digitally enhanced the contrast of the photos and added grain to further enhance the contrast. The layers of paint are applied with silk screening squeegees. I use water and other techniques to ensure that the underlying image remains visible. Materials My photographs are printed on 100% cotton fine art paper with pigmented inks for the most archival prints possible. Location Everything I needed for this series of work was here in Bend, Oregon U.S.A.

United States
Chuck Downs is an American artist known for combining reality with abstraction through black and white photography and layers of color. His work has been described as "evoking dreamlike textures and shapes." His method of making art emphasizes shape, texture and mood while focusing on the uniqueness of the subject or topic. "Black and white photography works well for me because I can eliminate visual elements that distract from the subject." Chuck's treatment of photographs was influenced by the high contrast photographs of NASA's Apollo travels to the moon (1969-1972). Although Chuck's earlier works focused solely on shape, texture and light, his more recent work incorporates concepts and personal experiences.
