Tom was born in Southern California in 1966. He has been drawn to the creative arts his entire life, sculpting and sketching as a boy. He has lived in the Pacific Northwest for more than thirty years. He attended TESC and University of Washington. He lives in Olympia, Washington with his wife, Anna, and their five children. He started to paint prolifically in 2008. He is compelled to paint. He paints the beauty of nature and our humanity. Painting allows him to explore emotions with visual imagery; he creates the images to convey mood and depth. He paints the line of reality and illusion. His paintings are abstract and impressionistic. His subject matter is the natural world and the beauty he encounters. He loves colors and the refractive nature of light. He likes to paint to produce an experience; to invite the audience to view the art aesthetically and emotionally. He captures what is beneath the surface of the image. He began painting with traditional oils and started experimenting with oils and resins the last several years. He inlays gold, copper, silver and variegated metals. He adds metallic and luminescent powder and glass beads to produce an interaction with light. He varies the consistency of the oil mixtures to create textures on the surface of the canvas. He creates a natural chemistry with the painting. He will produce a thick paint that will pucker or bead such as a blossom or he may add mineral spirits to thin the paint so that it bleeds and runs. It is a process, an evolution; he paints and the painting reacts. It is controlled and uncontrolled, raw and refined.
