I was thinking about waves. Not water-waves but more the waves all around us - wi-fi waves. They're everywhere. We can neither see them nor hear them, but they are there, constantly... Waves have regularity - very small or very large - but regularity all the same. When it came to creating a visual representation of this, one of my first thoughts was that there will be many different waves all in the same space, so in 2-dimensional space overlapping was a kind of gift. To my mind it makes the image at once very complicated, almost like threads in a fabric, but also, again as a fabric can be, almost monochrome... I thought it important also, with these early experiments, to allow for absence, just to show the contrast... My lines, I'll admit, aren't very regular although at any distance I do believe they appear to be. The way I applied the paint meant it often misbehaved. Anyway, I still think it works ok for the eye and that's what counts...I think the overall effect adapts itself to mood rather than evoking any kind of concrete image that the waves around us resolve themselves into on our devices...

France
Moving to France some years ago I was able to exchange the creative profession of accountancy for something more personally imaginative. A long-standing interest in literature - particularly modernist styles of writing - has become one of the main inspirations of my work. Contemporary political culture is a principal theme and, since I now enjoy a rural existence, issues concerning ecology. My methods have evolved from techniques derived from what in France is called bricolage (cutting, shaping, gouging, for instance), to intricate masking and the image-making potential of clear Perspex. Beyond the selection of paintings shown here, a more extensive range of my work can be seen at www.peterchamart.com.
