This painting is part of a mini series entitled Twins of Colney Hatch. I routinely walk past a pair of semi-detached houses in my North London neighbourhood, and was struck by how similar yet different the two dwellings are - like twin sisters. One clearly inhabited and regularly maintained, the other (represented here) less obviously so and surrounded by seasonal flora. At the time of writing there are four paintings and a series of oil pastel studies representing these houses, which are typical of North London. Houses like this one are now gradually being renovated, split into smaller homes or altogether removed to be replaced by blocks of flats as the city keeps expanding. My paintings are an attempt at documenting their intriguing presence and giving them a little extra permanence. This work is characterised by a dialogue between strict, straight architectural lines in opposition to the painterly aspect of surrounding grass and shrubbery. It is realised on an exhibition-grade cotton canvas using acrylic paint and a little tinted charcoal which mixed with the paint. It is signed front and back and the sides of the canvas are painted, leaving you to decide whether to frame it or not (I wouldn't :).

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
