Originally titled, "Lowcountry 1," this is one of a set although, not a diptych since they’re not supposed to hang exactly side by side. U3 and U4 are different but, similar enough to sort of work like eyes, two different images delivering similar information. - A few years ago I failed the driving test, the doctor said I had perfect vision in one eye and it had been compensating for the bad eye. I started to think about how people can interpret the same thing in many different ways. I thought about the word, “compensating,” and the mental process of how this works. We see or hear one thing and we draw a conclusion. This perception is indirectly linked to what we've been exposed to in the past and helps us define our reality. Obviously, our backgrounds and levels of understanding affect how we see the world around us. When I see or hear the word, “Beast,” I automatically think, Anti-Christ - a Zoologist might think, animal - a child might think, monster. If, I were to title or tell you that this paintings is, “Genesis,” you might start interpreting the clouds as the spirit of the almighty or something else. The fact is, these two paintings were carefully made to be of equal quality. And, when viewed together, would allow you to select one to be better or worse than the other and, for no other reason than for you to explore why that happened.

Statement: What is human, if not a catalyst to express the abstract form. There is a type of transcendence that occurs in Art, an almost contradictory hypnotic state of awareness. The existence of that intimate relationship between a painting and its viewer is fundamental, the obscure and imperceptible language that is only recognized by each individual, my mother would say, “ I know what I like.” There is an intentional evasiveness in my work, these are the things that are implied. When figures and nature are more about shapes and atmosphere they are reduced to emotion, this mood is their strength. Abstraction, by its very nature is disconnected and ambiguous, it’s this detachment from reality that allows it to become a middle ground for cognitive subject matter. Something familiar but not specific - a sense of place but from a separate reality. See more: http://www.ajvalero.com/about-3/
