However, they performed not only practical, but also an equally important symbolic role. In ancient beliefs guarding elements attached special importance. In particular this applies to ornaments, necklaces and embroidery. For example, beads, wreathes, embroidery on sleeves of shirts and blouses were not just decoration, but served as amulets which would protect people from evil forces. Equally important were color, cut and shape of clothes. It concerned also shoes and jewelry. They protected from "evil eye" and helped to get rid of "evil forces", various diseases and misfortunes. Once a girl was born, her parents prepared a name amulet for her. The amulet necklace passed inherited from mothers and grandmothers, that made it more and more valuable. The image of Ukrainian women is associated with the two most important features: colorful beads and embroidery.
