About The Artwork

The inspiration for this painting stems from the term "infinite melody," coined by composer Richard Wagner to describe the non-periodic structure of the melody in his stage works. Beyond Wagner, the phrase has come to symbolize the dissolution of traditional musical forms since the late 19th century. Wagner first employed the term "infinite melody" in 1860 in his essay "Zukunftsmusik" to define his compositional approach. He asserted that "the only true form of music is melody" and that when a musician articulates the inexpressible, it manifests as "the unmistakable form of his loudly sounding silence: the infinite melody." This concept marked a shift towards viewing music as an inner monologue or stream of consciousness. Wagner introduced the infinite melody as a necessary historical departure from the dance-oriented forms of Italian opera. However, due to numerous criticisms in subsequent years—often mockingly referred to as an "infinite lack of melody"—he seldom used the term in later years.
