The 16th century print ‘Draughtsman Making a Perspective Drawing of a Reclining Woman’ by Albrecht Dürer shows a way to draw a female figure in perspective using a net between the artist and a model. This device aims to transform a three-dimensional figure into an image in front of the artist’s sight. Similar method is applied in the work by Anya: a sensual and provocative sculpture St. Theresa in Ecstasy by Bernini is drawn through a net. However, only the outline is present, and every element from each square is being drawn separately. This approach creates unreadable map-like shapes. Thus, the ‘screen’ looses it’s tool for drawing a model as an object: instead of enjoying the appearence of a female figure the viewer is suggested to appreciate a clean aesthetics for colour and shape of the draperies around the body, with the colour taken from household paint ‘Nancy’s Blushes’, implying on the colour of cheeks in the moment of emotional expression.

Russia
Anya Mokhova is a contemporary Russian artist, who works predominantly in mixed media. Anya is well-known for her installations, happenings and sculptural objects, which invite visitors to immerse themselves into constructed realities. In her search for methods of artistic expression, Anya explores natural bases for her objects, such as tallow, bee’s wax, soap, classical ones, such as gold, brass and bronze, and contemporary, such as acrylic stone, silicone and resin. Incrustation, engraving and casting, rigid and soft, natural and artificial aim to create a visual language, which, in its frequent reference to classical arts, is intriguing and suggestive of a tactile interaction. Thus, Anya’s works aim to question the boundaries between real and metaphysical, in visual, sensual and imaginative ways of perception of artist-created objects and space. Since 2011 Anya has been taking part in shows in Russia and the UK. Anya visited summer schools and residencies, such as UPPA Winery Residency in Sevastopol, Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts and Royal College of Art in London. Her recent exhibitions included The New Japan at Solyanka VPA, The Impossible is Inevitable at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre. Her works were exhibited in parallel programmes of 6th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art and 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
