Jay Shaw, Houston Texas. A Warrior-Artist’s journey and reflections through art. Owner at Shaw Art Gallery. BFA University Houston. As a child Jay helped paint signs in his father sign shop and filled many sketch pads with his drawings. He graduated from Smithson Valley High School where he lettered in art. He won several art contests and was awarded an art scholarship. In 1997 Shaw enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego California. While in the service He continued to draw. He designed many tattoos for fellow Marines. In 1997 He created a very popular unit logo for t-shirts and it became a popular tattoo for Marines of the unit. Jay considers it a unique honor when someone places his art indelibly on their skin. After being severely wounded in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 Shaw was medically retired from the Marines and in 2006 moved back to his hometown to be close to family and friends. Jay earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Houston where his sculpture was featured in a solo show for the opening of the new art building. He Is currently working in painting and sculpture. Jay draws inspiration from various life experiences including his combat experience. In 2019 Jay founded Shaw Art Gallery where his works are shown along with other local artists.
