About The Artwork

This series explores the concept of the artificial becoming preferential over the natural and what gets altered in translation. This piece was made by printing CMYK process silkscreens onto wood. The image is a seamless bark pattern found via a Google search. The bark pattern covers and camouflages the actual wood grain. This represents a controlled experience overwriting a natural one. Through the printing process, the colors become more saturated than what the eye would see looking at actual bark. This hints at the idea of a hyper-real experience being generated from trying to mimic something real with artifice. The print produces a trompe l’oeil effect and makes the viewer question what they are seeing if they are standing far enough away which connects thematically to the piece. There is also an aspect of camouflage that speaks to the posturing that people maintain in the online versions of themselves This connects to the images origins as the it was found on the internet.

Alexander Key is an emerging contemporary artist from Charlotte, North Carolina. His work appropriates a wide variety of cultural ephemera, extracting familiar aesthetics and re-contextualizing them into new compositions that act as bittersweet commentaries. Mining from the resonance of childhood images and personal nostalgia, he explores the impact of these mental keepsakes on a broader collective memory. Working primarily in the medium of silkscreen printing, his work ranges from monotone prints to densely layered paintings. Please reach out if you are interested in showing his work or want to know more about his artistic practice.
