Urban Project 5 Painting

I have been fascinated by storefronts ever since I set my tiny baby eyes on one. The text fonts and graphic signs, the products, the colors, the characters, logos, language, culture and so on. I want to call store fronts a portraiture of someones product. I may not always want the product, but the storefront sets a precedence for me to be interested in it. It's kind of like falling in love at first glance, but keeping the mystery present by crafting it into an art work. The market stall depicted in this piece was located in Namdaemun market, in Seoul, South Korea. I had never made the visit to Namdaemun market not thinking much of it. I think around my 5th or 6th year in Korea, I was invited to a lunch with my fathers friend in Namdaemun market. I was really inspired by the energy and vibrancy, and unlike it's sister markets it had a more traditional sensibility. The stalls felt like what you would see in your local marketplace around your Korean neighborhood, but the scale was upped by at least 10 times. There were multiple levels and all of them had a multitude to things being sold. Most of them being counterfeit clothes. The stall that I depicted above felt like the perfect example of a local Korean stall, so I decided to create an illustration out of it.
