About The Artwork

There is a lot of details in this particular painting. I made this piece with a Warrior child in mind, but later on decided to make a grown woman instead. Although in ancient times the age of Adulthood was very different, I wanted to portray a woman grown enough to make her own decisions and have build a confidence in herself and her abilities. Stories around Valkyries/Amazon have been fascinating to me for a while now. This woman has leather hand made clothes and fur boots on. Her hair is open and left free, wild. She has a long and broad sword and a shield, which are two very masculine attributes. The wolf' head is on the shield as a decoration as well as a weapon. Both shield and blade are well used, showcasing that it is not her first battle. I researched a lot around Vikings and found out details such as the fact that the shields often had a spear head to further hurt the enemy and protect themselves. Because valkyries are part of the Nordic mythology, my research was very important in the process. The floor is a red purple color, which refers to blood soaked in the ground from battles. The sky is a mix of yellow, orange and red. In some stories it says the skies turn red after so much blood has been spilled. I made this painting with a palette knife for the background, which is how I got the colors coming out so well in the sky. There is an eagle and a crow at the warrior's feet, only partly there. The Crow is in reference to Odin (It is said that two crows travel the world, then go back to Odin to tell him what they have witnessed). The eagle is a powerful bird, and is drawn to further accentuate the woman's strength. I think the mix of resources came in handy as I don't think I would have had this effect for the sky if it wasn't for the palette knives. I hope this piece give strength to my viewers. We are too often led to believe that women are the "weaker" sex, as much from society as from History. I strongly believe that although women may not hold as much strength in muscles, we are in no way weak. It takes a lot of courage for many women still to go a different way from what their family set them out to do; it takes a lot of pain to go through childbirth. It take an enormous amount of love and emotion to give out your heart to your husband, your children, your life while sacrificing yourself for them. I want female viewers to feel pride when they see this painting, to remind them of their strength of will and their ability to just BE themselves. There are few things that are more important than to be comfortable in yourself, to love YOU.

My name is Lolita and I am a Contemporary Painter. I get my inspiration from things I see and hear and read. I have a very wide imagination and my subjects aren't always real. When I walk through the streets of London, I see invisible bridges that wizards cross, children running after pixies and men and women chatting to animals beside them. I paint many subjects and work in different styles. To add to my -sometimes wild - imagination, I am also a strong believer of Achievement and Empowerment. Heroes may be flawed, but as I read somewhere before "perfect is boring" (I can't quite remember who said it, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for that). So, you may notice in my work that I create achievement through an idea or a story, a sense of Self-Belief and Greatness.
