Varicose Dreams Painting

When I was a teenager, sitting in art class on the floor, I noticed my teacher's feet. They had these patterns under the skin, creating a network of unusual colors for the skin. I asked her about it and she explained to me that she had varicose veins, a condition that causes her capillaries to twist and sometimes break under the skin. It always stuck with me. The broken veins, bits of twisted bluish patterns- This original canvas is much older than the finished artwork itself, and for a long time had a broken panel in the frame. The canvas was a gift from someone as a way to encourage me to paint but for years it sat in a corner, part of a broken dream, collateral damage from the pressures of a life that was moving too fast. I tried to paint on it a few times, but it never made it anywhere, and with every emotional breakdown and sharp turn in life, I’d wipe out the entire thing as though I was wiping out time. But then something happened. Just by itself, one day, I cried and I poured myself on it. I filled in the broken bits in gold, like kintsugi. Giving my canvas another life, and returning its value, with just a little extra. And when I stepped back to look at it, it reminded me of all the broken bits of dreams that got too twisted, they showed on the skin. And I knew, I knew exactly what this was. It was my varicose dreams. It's one of the only artworks in this collection that uses string to write its story.
