I made this painting on top of a hill looking out on the pacific ocean in Baja California. In the distance I frequently saw the whales swimming by. I also saw a lizard crawling behind a rock while I was painting. The donkey you can see in the right corner of the painting is a wild donkey. He walked by and always greeted me when I walked around the beach and on the path up the hill. The car you can see driving up the road is full with surfers who are going to surf in the ocean. There are very big waves in this spot. The landscape of Mexico is quite magnificent. For me this is the best place in the world and I loved sitting there on the hill and painting this picture. The sound of the waves is also wonderful and I can still hear this sound when I look at this painting. The painting is painted 'en plain air'. The sides of the painting are also painted and it is signed at the back of the painting. I like to sign my painting at the back becauce I like to dream away while looking at it and not be disturbed by something that in my opinion doesn't belong in the image.

I live in Groningen a town in the north of The Netherlands. I get my inspiration from the living nature, people and the world around me. I love especially the variety and complexity of everyting and everyone who lives in the here (where ever that might be) and the now. I work with oilpaint on canvas because oil gives the best colors. Also oil has the capacity to hold the emotions and the atmospere into the paint. So that if you look at the painting for a longer time it really comes to life. I like to paint directly 'en plein air'. For me color is the most important. Before form there is color.
