About The Artwork

Original painting by Irene Makarova. My works are in many collections around the world. The painting was inspired by the Lithuanian myth as well as influenced by the current events in Russia, since the artist was born and raised in Russia. Vilktakis are werewolves in Lithuanian mythology. One can be either born or become Vilktaki after a sorcerer has cast a spell. One can choose to turn into a Vilktaki by tumbling over a willow stump. People turned into wolves, as legend has it, possess the human mind but they can not speak. Those who became wolves of their own free will are dangerous for the people: they have a bad temper, they steal the neighbor's sheep, quite often openly attack people, inflict mutilation, and sometimes do not deny themselves the pleasure of eating human flesh. In a collection of Lithuanian tales, there is an interesting motif: in order to regain his human form, a werewolf who has turned into a bear or a wolf must kneel motionlessly for a hundred years. Oil on canvas One-of-a-kind artwork Size: 42х90 cm / 16,5x35 inches (unframed) Depth: 0,1 cm Yellow edges around the image (can be seen on the photo) are to bend them onto a sub-frame when stretchig the canvas on the bars. This artwork is sold unframed. The painting is signed on the front and also titled and signed on the back. The painting comes with the Certificate of Authenticity. To ship the canvas it is removed from the bars and shipped in the tube. When received you just have to take it to your local framers to get it stretched on the bars again. This is how the delivery is safer and cheaper for a painting of this size. If you are willing to receive this painting already stretched and ready to hang, please message the Saatchi Team BEFORE purchasing to discuss the shipping price. I can send you the painting already stretched and ready to hand (the shipping price will be higher in this case).

Irene Makarova was born in Moscow, Russia, and currently lives and works in London, UK. Since 2005, she studied painting in the studio of the Russian artist Konstantin Kaufman. She graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute in 2008, and then she took an Art course at Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after Surikov. She joined the International Art Foundation in 2008. She prefers to work in oil and often uses open colours in her artwork. Irene mostly creates expressive figurative art. The form and relationships between different forms and figures set a huge field of interpretation through different historical and mythological contexts. Irene's paintings are born in her inner world through observation and experience of the surrounding life. Irene's art was influenced by the pictorial language of the Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century and the work of German expressionists, as well as by Bosch, Giotto, El Greco, and Modigliani. Irene has participated in more than 60 exhibitions in Russia and Europe. Her works are in private collections in England, Scotland, Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Portugal, the Czech Republic and the USA.
