About The Artwork

camouflage is used as a defence system to disguise appearance, mask location, identity, and movement- usually to mix with their surroundings. In nature, this allows the prey to avoid predators and for predators to move furtively among the prey. Camouflage is about blurring the “edges” between the object and the background - in other words between the subject and the context. Its clearly a survival mechanism which is used to protect or attack, and exist in all levels of life. In cultural camouflage one has to identify these sharp edges (which are not accepted as normal), and obscure them by adapting characteristics of the environment. It can be a conscious or unconscious process. Camouflage can be dangerous, not only to the surroundings but to the the person itself because when camouflage progresses for a long period of time, the person can forget who he/she really is. This work is precisely about that. About fragments of information, about things existing without being perceived, about the ability of our mind to add the missing information. Above all of that, this work is about those "edges" we blur... where does one person ends and the other begins? who am I when I'm camouflaged? and where are you when you are hidden? This large work is a direct result of a performance. in fact, if we think about painting in a philosophical matter, all paintings are results of performances- but most of the time we only see the result. Each of my “Reverse Camouflage” performances produces three works: live performance resulting with a painting and video art. Performance art was born of interdisciplinary thinking, to be made uncomfortable by it, to admit your feelings of suspicion, fear, or dislike. The performance gives a room to think about who you are, where you are, and how you relate to those who are not you. It allows us to contemplate the rules (written or unwrriten), of any given space or time.

1988 - Born in Ukraine/ 1989 - immigrated to Israel/ Lived in 3 continents and over 5 countries. Currently living in Barcelona Spain. I always have and always will see and remember myself as an artist. My name is Hannah Berestizhevsky, visual artist and graphic designer. I have been doing art ever since I can remember. Always was I drawn to visual experiments. While in my work I employ a number of different mediums, I am heavily focused on painting, video and performance, while painting is my core foundation. Many of my works explore the human as a source of inspiration, a subject matter and as a creative platform. Aiming to penetrate the viewer’s subconscious by creating a meditative state or sensation, and invite the audience to delve into the work and ‘transcend’ both themselves and the work of art itself.
